ISO 9001 requirements
ISO 9001 requirements cover context, leadership, planning, support, operation, performance evaluation and continual improvement.
The main ISO 9001 requirement areas.
ISO 9001 follows the Annex SL management system structure. It asks organisations to understand their context, define leadership responsibilities, plan quality objectives, support people and resources, control operations and evaluate performance.
The requirement areas below are paraphrased for orientation only. Organisations should use the official standard when implementing or auditing a quality management system.
- Context of the organisation
- Leadership and quality policy
- Planning, risks, opportunities and objectives
- Support, competence and documented information
- Operation and process control
- Performance evaluation, audit and management review
- Improvement and corrective action
Evidence matters as much as intent.
Certification looks for evidence that the quality management system is defined, used and improved. Policies and procedures matter, but records, audit findings, corrective actions and management review outputs show whether the system is working.
